Removing the Taboo: Mental Health & Business Ownership

Removing the Taboo: Mental Health & Business Ownership

This week, I did something I don’t know if many other business owners would do. I went on my podcast and talked about mental health and my personal journey for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Why mental health matters to me so much

I want to raise awareness for those of us who are high-functioning people living with mental health conditions. This is a very real and raw episode with my personal story. At the end of this episode you will hear a few stories from my colleagues and their own personal experiences as well.

Within my family, I grew up with parents who were psychiatric social workers. I also had a number of people in my family who had mental health challenges, and who were unfortunately able to function.

I had small bouts of depression when I was a teen and young adult, but I didn’t know what a “depressive episode” really was until after my first son. I...

Let’s Make Your Business Burnout-Proof

Let’s Make Your Business Burnout-Proof

If you’ve been in business for more than a few months, you know the feelings that can come up. Overwhelm, frustration, exhaustion, and sometimes even anger. These are actually signs of burnout, but most of us (especially women) just associate this with our busy lives and trying to grow a business.

While there is actual medical research on how to reverse burnout, I want to talk about how to prevent it in our businesses. Especially as female fitness and wellness professionals who’ve weathered a huge hit to our industries and livelihood (thanks, pandemic!), we need to get real about it. Our businesses are meant to support our lives, not the other way around. So let’s dig into what a business can look like without burnout.

Identifying business models that lead to burnout

The first step in fixing a problem is admitting you have it, right? The same goes for figuring out how to avoid burnout in your business. If...

The Business Basics You Need to Confidently Run Your Studio or Practice

The Business Basics You Need to Confidently Run Your Studio or Practice

As a physical therapist, I wanted to make people feel better. When I got certified in Pilates, I knew that the two of those services went well together… and I began dreaming about what it would mean to start my own Pilates and physical therapy studio.

That was in 2007, and since then, I have built a multi-million dollar Pilates studio business with multiple locations. But it wasn’t like I went from “I want to start my own studio!” to “a million dollars in revenue” overnight. It also wasn’t an easy road, trying to figure out everything that went into growing a successful business.

Starting a business to help people didn’t prepare me for all the terms and systems I needed to understand. There was the whole pricing problem, figuring out my income and expenses, understanding lease agreements, hiring instructors… it felt like a lot. And it was a...

Confessions of a Studio Owner

business personal Jul 24, 2020

To call these last several months unprecedented would be the understatement of the year. I never in my wildest dreams thought that phrases such as quarantine, social distancing, or flattening the curve would become part of our everyday vernacular. Nor did I imagine that I would be forced to close my business for an entire quarter with only a moment's notice.

So many have been affected by this pandemic. Parents have had to learn to homeschool, teens have forfeited their senior year athletics and graduations, millions have lost their jobs, thousands have lost their lives and there is still no real end in sight.

As the owner of Pilates in the Grove, a multi location service based business, I completely believe it is all of our responsibility to do our part to flatten the curve and do what we can to slow the spread of this virus. I along with countless others made the difficult decision to close both of my studios on March 17th and pivoted quickly to online...

Business Tips That Test "Positive" During Quarantine

Hi everyone.

Today, I’d like to share with you a quick run down of my FB Live last Tuesday with the topic: COVID-19 Q&A where I answered any and all business-related questions regarding how to navigate this “new normal”.

I’ll also be sharing with you a couple of business tips and best practices that are working for Pilates in The Grove and that would hopefully work for your business too.

Without further ado, here are some of our Q&A highlights:

1. What is the “CARES Act” stimulus package?

The CoronaVirus Aid Relief Economic and Security act was passed last Friday, March 27th, with the guidelines yet to be official and applications to begin on or before April 3rd, Friday.

Under this act is the PPP or Payroll Protection Program that should help people keep their team and staff and pay for operating expenses.

The application duration would be from April 3rd to June 30th for companies...
